Ireland’s grass-fed family system is one of the most carbon efficient in the world because our cows graze outdoors on fresh grass for most of the year. On average, other countries produce two times more carbon per litre of milk than Ireland which has led to a global reputation for sustainably produced dairy.

GREENHOUSE GAS

Over ½ of the land in Ireland is used to grow grass for agriculture. Every 10-day increase in the grazing season results in 1.7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE

96% of Ireland’s dairy farmers are certified members of the Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme – the only national scheme of its kind in the world.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION

Ornua has achieved a total emissions reduction of 18% in manufacturing operations since 2016.

WATER USAGE

Water usage per kg of product manufactured has reduced by 13% since 2016

With farm-gate emissions making up the majority of emissions within the supply chain, circular solutions such as anaerobic digestion have significant potential. We are involved in an industry wide project to develop the infrastructure and anaerobic digestion expertise in Ireland which will have a significant impact in driving down our emissions.
